I did something thing that nearly cost me my life, I believed in a Myth called “Balance”.
You’ve heard about “balancing work and home” and “finding balance in your life”.
Balance implies a seesaw, a playground teeter-tooter. A childlike concept where one half is up ONLY when the other half is DOWN.
There’s the myth! The thought that to be an amazing CEO, that must mean you can’t also be an amazing mother. Or if you’re a remarkable father, who’s at the family events, you can’t ALSO be successful in business.
And when you accept that as truth, you begin to compromise yourself. You compromise your dreams. You compromise your life’s goals.
This compromise is where we’re split in BELIEF and ACTION. You THINK one way but ACT in another way.
Compromise is CAUSED BY a lack of COMMUNICATION. You feel like you CAN’T speak up, or it’s too DANGEROUS, that people won’t LIKE us, that we’ll be LAUGHED at or PUNISHED for having an opinion.
For me, the RESENTMENT I felt was because of the COMPROMISES I made, which brought me to a point where I thought very little of myself. Then I began to make more and more mistakes.
It was a spiral with LACK OF COMMUNICATION leading to CONFLICT, leading to me thinking I was a HORRIBLE person, leading me to believe I was causing SUCH pain and doing SO many things to aggravate my loved ones, that it would be EASIER for them if I was GONE, that EVERYONE would be better off… if I was GONE.
THAT led to me planning out EXACTLY how to die and make it LOOK like an accident… so of course, the life insurance would still pay off!
Now, here’s a Spoiler alert… I didn’t follow THAT particular plan! I SLOWLY realized how wrong my thinking was. I fought and kicked and scratched and CRAWLED my way back from the darkest period you can EVER imagine.
I found that BALANCE was LIMITING. It created problems instead of solving them. Then… I discovered HARMONY!
I flashed back to when I was 16, sitting high up in a balcony looking down as the Canadian Opera’s orchestra played. The trombones and clarinets, drums booming, harps and violins and cellos.
I also thought of a Barbershop Quartet with the tenors and a baritone and a bass all contributing to making your ears happy and your toes tap. Both the orchestra and the Quartet have different notes, in different octaves at different levels, yet ALL complementing each other, all adding to each other. Just the way that YOUR life happens!
Just the way COMMUNICATION can happen when the RIGHT NOTES are put together.
When we seek to have HARMONY in our lives, THEN we can truly communicate!
Join me to strive each day to compassionately COMMUNICATE using the words that people can best HEAR…
And to remember that Harmony TRIUMPHS over balance.
